This is an excellent application of Caslon Antique, in my opinion, as it provides a suitably creepy (but not too creepy!) feel to these children’s ghost story books. It should be noted that some softcover printings of the first book (not shown in this post) also use a combination of Helvetica and Caslon Antique for the author and illustrator names. The second and third book, share a similar cover arrangement as the first book, though the use of Berling has been replaced by a combination of Helvetica and Caslon Antique. A first edition hardcover version of the book can be seen lower in this post, and uses Caslon Antique together with Palatino Italic in a slightly different cover arrangement. The cover of the 1989 reprint of the first book shown at the top of this post is set in Caslon Antique, with Berling Italic used for the author name and illustrator. The picture above features the 1989 reprint softcover edition of the first book. The book series has sold over seven million copies as of 2017. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a set of three horror-themed books aimed at younger readers, which became wildly popular in the 1980s and 90s due to outlandish and creepy illustrations by artist Stephen Gammell. Though homosexuality has been legal in Armenia since 2003, it has historically been very difficult to be both queer and Armenian. Like any oppressed diasporic population, Armenians simply learned to blend in to wherever they landed in order to survive and thrive. Few Americans understand the Armenian American experience and its largely diasporic culture, know anything about Armenian history or the Armenian genocide, or could point out where Armenia is on a map (which has changed tremendously throughout history). Armenia is a country located across the world in the Caucasus Mountains near Iran, Turkey, and Georgia. Armenian American author Taleen Voskuni knows Armenian representation in American literature, film, TV (the Kardashians aside), music, art, or, let’s face it, anywhere is rare. I thought the whole thing was smartly done. There is a lot of action, but also character building. These are bald headed, shark teethed vampires. These are not good looking ripped or beautiful vampires. SHE WAS GETTING USED TO BEING SCARED The story starts right off with the action, with one of the best beginnings to any book I have ever read. That was only six years ago, but it seems gayness was more disturbing to some, more than heads being cut off, humans being eaten alive, half deads killing people and vampires. This book was published in 2007 and took some reviewer hits because the main character is a lesbian. This is a vampire masterpiece, a sleeper, a character driven classic. August Flynn is a monster who can never be human, no matter how much he once yearned for it. Kate Harker is a girl who isn’t afraid of the dark. But when Harker’s men try to kill her and pin it on the Flynns, August and Kate find themselves running from both sides, in a city where monsters are real… The truce that keeps the families at peace is crumbling, and August is sent to spy on Kate. Kate Harker and August Flynn’s families rule opposite ends of Verity, a grisly metropolis where violent acts summon real monsters: bloodsucking Malchai clawing Corsai and soul-stealing Sunai. The growth of countries such as China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, Turkey, Indonesia and others signals that we are now living through “the third power shift of the modern era” - the two previous power shifts having been the rise of the Western world in the 15th century and the rise of the United States at the end of the 19th. We are clearly told from the very beginning that this book is not about the decline of America but about the rise of everyone else.
